Learning on the Go!

More often than not, we just want to crash at home after work. After dedicating our time and energy from 7am to 5pm (on golden days without on calls), we just want to shut off our mind and not do or think about anything work-related, let alone LIFE.

On the other hand, the consequences of ignoring our responsibilities can be detrimental to our career & dreams. We know, deep down, about the grind we need to make everyday to succeed. Procrastination is always the lover there to create alibis for us but GRIT is the strict coach who is there to whip our ass until we get things right!

As the saying goes, "excuses sound the best to those who made them up". I get frustrated when I waste my own time, especially if the person wasting my time is me. I'm not saying that I never waste my time, in fact, I am always struggling to shift my focus to studies, research writing and this blog! I do create excuses like "I'm spending time with family" or "I deserve a break". (Take note, these are extremely valid excuses to me, hence justifying the quote above". Therefore, I always find it useful to squeeze in some time with these podcasts while I'm driving, lying down doing nothing or resting. 40% of the time, information just enters one ear only to exit the other. I'm still okay with 60% reaching the brain and maybe only 20% gets retained. Not very effective learning but that's better than wasting 100% of the time.

1. RCP Medicine Podcast or here

Hosted by Dr Amie Burbridge, she's an acute physician in Coventry but she has a background in Rheumatology. The podcast discusses a case scenario with a focus on the latest guidelines in the UK. I find her discussions very relevant to those taking the MRCP exam and in daily practice.

2. EMCrit Podcast

Hosted by Dr Scott Weingart, an Emergency Physician in the US. Very "high-yield" and straight-to-the-point discussions on acute scenarios on medicine. I mainly listen to medical, toxicology, airway and emergency-related topics but occasionally I dwell in surgical topics related to the medical field as well. He also covers ethical topics that are relevant to daily practice. I have been subscribing to his podcasts since medical school and Dr Scott certainly shows passion in making them. He also has a blog that has become a popular reference site

3. Behind the Knife: The Surgery Podcast or here or YouTube

Hosted by esteem surgeons & surgical fellows in the US. They have a YouTube Channel which I find really helpful for learning procedures. Out of the many surgical podcasts I screened through during my surgical posting, I find this most in-depth and useful. They explore guidelines and real-life scenarios and how things could have been done better. I admire their passion for general surgery despite being interested in internal medicine myself. Good content to explore.

4. EM Clerkship and here

Hosted by Dr Zack Olsen, an Emergency Doctor in the US. This channel is mainly geared towards medical students. I switched to this channel from EMCrit because of the sheer simplicity Dr Zack puts forward basic concepts and ideas during his discussions. Each podcast was never longer than it is supposed to be. The downside to this is that you might not get the "latest" content there is out there. With his hectic work schedule and newborn daughter, you can imagine it to be harder for him to manage everything on this own, hence each podcast is released monthly after Sept 2019.

Life lessons :

5. BFM 89.9

A radiostation mainly about business and finance the channel frequently hosts topics related to culture, art, politics, education, etc in Malaysia. BFM stands out because of its approach to contemporary issues in Malaysia - open discussions from many different points of view and interviewing key persons of the industry.

"Breakfast Grill", "Ringgit & Sense", "Live & Learn", just to name a few are interesting sessions from the radio station. Unfortunately, you can only tune in on the radio in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor areas. Alternatively, there is an app you can download to play on bluetooth speakers.

6. BFM: Ringgit & Sense

Hosted by Roshan Kanesan, a regular on BFM. The show is mainly about personal finance, which is relevant to the average salaryman out there. If you are interested in personal finance, you can check out the social media of various guests he invites on his show.

7. TED Talks Daily

Universally recognised but genuinely underrated. I believe the website's list of videos says it all. Mainly a public speaking platform for people all around the WORLD to share their ideas, I would like to think of TED as a playground for the brainchild of our species. I believe it will serve as a public bank to store human ideas throughout history. To start, watch videos that have the most popularity.

I would suggest you give these channels ago. You don't have to listen to them in alphabetical order or in priority. (You could of course) They are meant to make learning fun, not a chore. Pick a topic that interests you right away. Once you find joy or inspiration in listening to these discussions you will never have to "force" yourself to learn again.
